Seniors First, a nonprofit social service organization dedicated to serving the needs of Central Florida’s elderly population, had yet another very successful Turkey Trot event this Thanksgiving. There were 5,589 registered participants – an increase of 271 people from last year’s trot.

On Nov 2, 2011 approximately 1,000 business leaders attended an awards ceremony that benefited Junior Achievement of Central Florida at the Rosen Center Hotel. Jimmy Hewitt, Linda Chapin and the late Hy Lake were honored as Hall of Fame Laureates. Orlando Regional Chamber's Jacob Stuart was honored as the 2011 Spirit of Achievement Award winner. On Saturday, November 5, 600 attendees dressed in their finest “caveman couture” and rocked the coolest party since the Ice Age! The Orlando Science Center's Annual Neanderthal Ball was set amidst the prehistoric atmosphere of the Science Center's dinosaur exhibit. The event included a “diamond dig” for an authentic half-karat diamond, opportunities for first-hand discoveries with real fossil hunters, an Ice Age-themed martini bar (courtesy of Absolut Vodka) and so much more - all to benefit programs for youth at the Orlando Science Center.

The Center for Independent Living (CIL) – a Winter Park nonprofit that offers support and services to people with disabilities – held its Stroll & Roll fundraising event at Lake Baldwin. CIL’s clients and advocates fundraise to support the nonprofit’s programs – communication/education for the deaf, housing counseling, accessibility, employment services, mental health counseling and aging services.

Heart of Florida United Way kicked off their annual campaign with 2011-12 Campaign Chair David Fuller, President/CEO of SunTrust Bank, Central Florida, announcing a goal of $17,750,000.  Last year, United Way helped 345,825 Central Floridians through 108 community programs and the United Way 2-1-1 resource, referral and crisis helpline.
